We are there for Chari

EDITOR - May I respond to Learnmore Chikondi's letter entitled Chari an inspiration. The Students Solidarity does not dispute the tremendous role played by Chari in the advancement of the students' cause in Zimbabwe.
Chikondi contends that organisations like the Crisis Coalition, the Studen

ts Solidarity Trust, and ZINASU have abandoned Chari in his hour of need. He further holds that ‘it is disheartening to learn that there are no safety nets in place to protect the likes of Chari.’
I must dispute the contents of this letter on behalf of the Students Solidarity. We are a non-partisan students’ body formed in 2002 to deal with politically victimised students, as an offshoot of the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU). Over the years the SST has expanded and has a fellowship program assisting about 77 politically victimised students, 44 of whom are studying with the University of South Africa. Four of the fellows are based in South Africa, where Chari is based. I spoke to the man last week when I was in Johannesburg, alerting him of the SST’s intention to facilitate his studies through UNISA, but we have not heard back from him yet.
We are there for distressed students – Chari is no exception.
