Karatekas leave for South Africa tourney

CAPE TOWN - The Kyokushin Karate Union of Zimbabwe sent a group of 23 junior fighters to South Africa on June 24 for the fifth annual Len Barnes Memorial tournament on June 28.

“The event that will be a big one and we hope Zimbabwe will impress as always the norm. It was my wish for all junior students to attend, but it appears a nightmare with the current economic challenges in the country,” Samson Muripo, teacher and third dan black belt, said.

The Zimbabwe junior fighters proved a force to reckon with, in the circles of kyokushin karate when they scooped several medals, in last year’s edition of the showcase, with a remarkable clean sweep, in the U/8 boys category.

Tadiwa Gatsi, Stephen Mulembasoja and Brett Kondowe were awarded with the gold, silver and bronze medal respectively.

This year’s tournament will feature juniors and colts (6-18years) from Swaziland, Zimbabwe and the hosts in commemoration of the fifth anniversary of the death of a great master, Shihan (Master) Len Barnes. Barnes, dubbed ‘the father of Karate’, died in 2003 and is remembered for his great works in the martial art sport in South Africa.
