DJ Oskido a legend

dj_oskidoHARARE - South African-based DJ Oskido has been named one of the Top 10 kwaito legends of all time by DStv's MTV Base. Oskido was born in Oukasi Brits a mining town north of Pretoria. His daddy is Zimbabwean Mr Easph Mdlongwa who that time was working at the South African mines in the late 60's.

His mother is South African the late Sophie Molefi who passed on in 1988. Oskido left SA at the age of 6 to stay with his daddy as the education in Zim was much superior compared to our Bantu education that time. He finished his high school at Gifford High in Bulawayo, however in 1985 he had to go back home in South Africa as her mum was ill. Unfortunately her mum passed on in 1988 and the rest is history.

MTV Base paid tribute to the cornerstones of kwaito, among them Arthur Mafokate, TK Zee, Boom Shaka, Mandoza and Oskido among others. Kwaito revolutionised the music industry and icons such as Oskido changed the way South Africans dressed and danced.

Oskido’s career is a fairytale one. After leaving Zimbabwe to seeker greener pastures in South Africa, Oskido started out selling boerewors rolls from a stall outside Club Razzmatazz in Hillbrow. It was the early nineties, and late at night he would sneak in to the club to jam to fresh house tracks. He became fascinated with dj-ing and occasionally took over while the DJ had a break. One night, Razzmatazzs resident didn’t pitch and he was asked to stand in. He hasn’t looked back since.

Mdlongwa is also one of radio’s most popular personalities, having taken care of YFM’s Rap Activity Jam with Rudeboy Paul for a while and now hosting Church Grooves, a bumping grooveathon on a Sunday night. The Church Grooves concept has extended into a platinum-selling range of Oskido’s Church Grooves CDs (through House Afrika Records).
