Circumcision free of charge

male_circumcision2BULAWAYO - The Ministry of Health and Child Welfare in conjunction with a Non-Governmental Organization has begun conducting male circumcision.

The Government and Population services International (PSI) earlier this year took up the initiative to reduce the spread of HIV/Aids by setting up male circumcision clinics throughout the country.

According to clinical tests conducted by the World Health Organisation (WHO), male circumcision reduces the risk of contracting the deadly pandemic by 60 per cent.

“When my wife read in the newspapers earlier this year that the government would be introducing male circumcision programme, she encouraged me to undergo the surgery. At first I was reluctant because I have heard that these kinds of operations have gone wrong in other parts of the world,” said a man from Magwegwe who visited the Bulawayo clinic for his operation.

A nervous looking Simon Bhelebana, 22, of Mpopoma said he got the motivation to undergo the operation from his friends.

“I’m afraid but very sure that all will go well as nothing happened to my friends who had the operation three weeks ago,” he said.

A surgeon who spoke on condition of anonymity said he had not encountered any problems.

“Since we opened everything has been going on well, but the worrying factor has been the few numbers that have been recorded so far.

The doctor said he was hopeful that the numbers would increase if male circumcision got more publicity.
