The Zimbabwe Cheetahs have secured a new sponsor

rugby Acorn Fund Management, a niche fund manager who specialise in alternative asset classes, especially in emerging markets. They currently operate a highly successful fund which lends money to social and affordable housing developers based in South Africa, and has been delivering an annual yield of 9.85% to UK and European investors for the last 3 years.

According to Shaun Godfrey, Acorn’s Marketing Director, Acorn Fund Management will in January 2010 be launching a venture capital fund which will seek to make investments in Sub-Saharan Africa (primarily South Africa, Zimbabwe and Angola). They will also launch a hospitality fund which is being backed by one of the worlds leading hotel chains since they see immense potential expansion within Africa. Acorn Fund Managent’s head of Corporate Governance and Risk Management, Marjorie Ngwenya, comes from Zimbabwe and is one of the people who have proposed this sponsorship package.

Acorn Fund Management have chosen the “Cheetahs Player Sponsorship” package, an entry level sponsorship package, as a way of introducing themselves to the exciting world of International Rugby Sevens and Zimbabwe’s sporting superstars, the Cheetahs. They have dedicated 1200 to sponsor the team Captain, Jacques Leitao. As the Cheetahs financial situation is so tight at the moment, Leitao has in turn proposed the funds be used on the entire team, as they are still short of medical equipment and player insurance amongst other things required for the team to compete in Dubai.

The Zimbabwe Rugby Union would like to thank Acorn Fund Management for this sponsorship package and hopes to put up a worthy performance at the Dubai and George IRB World Series tournaments this coming month. The ZRU would also like to thank Mike Tashaya of Quartz Marketing for his assistance in securing this important sponsorship. www.zimbabwerugby.com
