Young athletes give hope

athleticsHARARE - The Harare Athletics Board Vice Chairman, Phineas Zinhiva, is confident the provincial team selected last weekend will give a spirited performance when the National Championships roar into life in Kwekwe this weekend.

Athletes selected from last weeks provincial race at Prince Edward School will sweat for honours against participants from the other nine provinces as the national race marks the beginning of the athletics season.

We are very interested in development. For the first time in our history we have included primary schools in this provincial race. We want to prepare them for the future so that we catch them young, Zinhiva said.

Young Josephat Kaveta gave Zinhiva and his colleagues every reason to be hopeful when he sprinted to the finish line with all the energy as if it was only the beginning.

Kaveta won the Under-16 boys 4km race in 16min 34sec, ahead of Tatenda Mudzamiri who crossed the line 26seconds later. Tinnety Dera came third in 17min 21sec.

Meanwhile the first girl to finish her race in the same category was Mufakose High Schools Furthermore Chiriseri, who was followed by Rutendo Kanda (18.52). Fadzai Tsakwas chase for the silver ended in vain when she crossed the line 4seconds after Kanda to land for the bronze.
