Embattled Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara’s political career may be at its end after his humiliating SADC snub, say analysts.

Last week’s summit recognised Mutambara as Deputy Premier, but not as a principal in the GNU.

The body chose to side with his politically savvy rival Welshman Ncube, to whom Mutambara handed the party’s presidency in January and is now desperately trying to claw back after a resolution to recall him from his DPM post.

Harare-based political analyst Charles Mangongera said the recent developments mark the end of Mutambara's road.

“His only claim to legitimacy is that he is the deputy prime minister and is a signatory to the GPA,” Mangongera said.

“SADC no longer recognises him as a principal. He had the chance to redeem himself if he had accepted the congress results and conceded that power had to be transferred to Ncube.”

“He has very few options left – he must jump ship or join Zanu (PF).”
