Borehole for the aged

In its quest to support vulnerable communities, HelpAge Zimbabwe, a Non Governmental Organisation has embarked on borehole rehabilitation programme here.

Villagers from village 19 have been walking more than seven kilometres in search of clean, safe water for drinking while irrigation projects in the area have all but collapsed.

Speaking to The Zimbabwean last week at the launch of Zvishavane Ward 19 Borehole Rehabilitation Programme, Priscilla Gavi, who is the HelpAge Director, said: “This borehole rehabilitation is under our water and sanitation programme. We have rehabilitated more than 100 boreholes under Runde Rural District Council.”

She added that HelpAge had also drilled 20 boreholes in other wards in the district.

“This is very important as water is a key priority in a society. As an organisation we have set a target to sink at least a borehole per village in order to ensure safe and clean water is accessible to the villagers,” she said.

Villagers in the area have welcomed the development.

“Even though some traditional leaders are trying to politicize the developmental projects by the Non Governmental Organisations, we are now living a better live considering that we will be having clean and safe water near us. I do not see the reason why these people (NGOs) should be chased away from us. We want to thank these people (HelpAge) for remembering us during these times of need,” said Joseph Makarimai, an elder in ward 19.
