Pressure for Question Time

Parliament is coming under increasing pressure to install the Prime Minister's Question Time that it promised long ago where the Premier would respond to written questions submitted by members to the Speaker and the President of the Senate.

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s Question Time has still not been established.

The proposal was first tabled by the minister of Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs, Eric Matinenga, before the House adjourned for Christmas. On Thursday Zanu (PF) MP Paul Herbert Mazikana reintroduced the motion for the Prime Minister's Question Time. He was ruled out of order after suggesting that the PM was taking legislators for granted.

Deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe in February was asked to withdraw a similar motion by Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara who advised the House that the plan had already been put into operation. Mutambara said that the Standing Rules and Orders Committee had already okayed the Prime Minister's Question Time under the mandated rules of the House. Five months later, it is yet to appear.
