So near, yet so far for Sables

Zimbabwe fell one stride short of the biggest climb of the year in the International Rugby Board rankings after completing 2011 as one of the five best performers.

The Sables, who suffered no defeat, catapulted 17 places up to 33rd in the world, but lost the honour to Switzerland, who climbed up 18 places to 49th, overcoming a 10-place drop.

“Zimbabwe’s unbeaten run with the scalps of Uganda (twice), Kenya (twice) and Madagascar has rocketed them up 17 places,” said the IRB.

Sound management has helped attract sponsors, much to the improvement of the national teams’ fortunes and buoyed by the performance, the Zimbabwe Rugby Union is confident of a berth in the next World Cup, scheduled for 2015.
