Theatre gurus feature in SA

Two renowned thespians, Daves Guzha and O’Brian Mudyiwenyama, are set to perform an internationally renowned two-man play in South Africa. “Protest” was written by the late Czech president, Vàclav Havel.

“Protest” performed in tribute to Havel, one of the most prominent freedom activist icons in the world, will premiere at the Atterbury Theatre in Pretoria on 13 September. It will then be showcased at the Theatre on the Square, in Sandton, Johannesburg on 16 September before rounding off the three city tour at the Fugard Theatre Studio in Cape Town on 18 September.

The performances, presented by the Czech Embassy in South Africa in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture of the Republic of South Africa and Vaclav Havel Library, will be accompanied by an exhibition of photographs of Vàclav Havel.

“Protest” is a story of two men – one suffers political imprisonment by totalitarian authorities for his work, while the other is a playwright who gets promoted by the regime because he puts a positive spin on the difficulties his countrymen are facing.

Havel’s “Protest” demonstrates how the restrictions of freedom of speech and thought spread conformity across all members of society while slowly eroding humanity.

The play will be performed in a unique style by a renowned Zimbabwean theatre company, Rooftop Promotions. It develops artistic initiatives that influence policy through community mobilisation and publicity of topical issues simultaneously promoting freedom of expression.
