Group targets science education

A group of community developers has established a new science education initiative to empower students in some of the country’s most disadvantaged schools.

The plan, a brainchild of Afrobizsense, run by a group of Zimbabwean human rights activists, realized that science education standards were declining in most rural schools.

“High school students who want to train as science teachers need assistance to supplement certain subjects especially in the Midlands and Matabeleland Provinces. There is a group undertaking extra lessons and we are sponsoring private teachers for them so that come next year, the students can enroll in colleges However, our resources are limited,” an Afrobizsense official told The Zimbabwean.

The organisation had initially embarked on an ambitious project to train female students from disadvantaged backgrounds as pilots. However, the project failed after sponsors could not find girls to meet the criteria.
