Two Oceans entry auction

Organisers of South Africa’s Two Oceans Marathon revealed this week that entries for this year’s event, which opened last month, had closed. There was however, still an olive branch extended by Old Mutual, the event’s naming rights sponsor, for those athletes who missed out on the earlier registration deadline.

“The 16,000 available entries for the Old Mutual Two Oceans Half Marathon have already been sold, but naming rights sponsor, Old Mutual, is giving runners who have not yet registered one more opportunity to participate in this year’s event,” said Lauren McMinn, a member of the event’s media team early this week.

“From Monday January 21, a total of 21 Half Marathon entries went on auction and will be there until February 10.” The annual Two Oceans Marathon is one of South Africa’s biggest athletics events and is run over a 56 kilometre distance, attracting a strong field of top athletes from across the world to South Africa’s coastal city of Cape Town.

Participants choose from various distances– the scenic 56 km ultra marathon, the equally popular 21km half marathon or the 5 km or 2.5km fun runs.

Four Zimbabwean runners – Honest Mutsakani (2001), Moses Munjodzi (2006) and Marko Mambo (2004, 2005 and 2008) and Stephen Muzhingi (2012) have won the 56 km event, while no Zimbabwean woman has ever won the 56 km event.
