Best of the Best: Stephen Matsaira

Stephen Matsaira is a former defender who played left back for Tanganda, Shabanie Mine, Zisco Steel and Lancashire Steel in his 20 years of playing soccer. These are his best of choices.

My Best Club

It has to be Shabanie Mine, where I played alongside James Kaunda, Clarkson Dzimbiri and Gerald Phiri. We were simply unstoppable and managed to give hard times to so-called big clubs like Highlanders, Dynamos and Caps United.

My Best Stadium

The Baghdad Stadium, Kwekwe, our “slaughter house” during my years at Lancashire Steel. Most of the so-called big clubs who visited us there went back empty-handed.

I wish I could be a teenager again and go back to that stadium. The atmosphere was always electrifying and our supporters made opponents lose concentration easily.

My Best Defence Partner

Shabanie Mine’s former evergreen defender, Gerald Phiri. That man always lifted my game and together we managed to stop dangerous strikers. The combination we had was one of the best in that century.

My Best Coach

Former Zimbabwean great, Moses ‘Razorman’ Chunga. He changed me from a nobody to a nationally-respected defender. A no-nonsense coach, he needed discipline all the time – on and off the field. He was a great tactician who instilled in his players a winning mentality.

My Memorable Time

When I was selected as one of the best 11 Soccer Stars of the year in 2002. I will treasure that honour and share it with all my generations.

My Shabanie Best 11

Andrew Chitsunga, Philip Sithole, Gerald Phiri, Misheck Makota, James Kaunda, Clarkson Dzimbiri, Max Ruza, Stephen Matsaira, Asani Juma, Thomas Makwasha, Francis Chandida and coach: Solomon Kaeke
