Mtawarira impressed

Zimbabwe-born national rugby team star, Tendai Mtawarira, recently expressed happiness at the growth of local rugby.

“The Beast” however, said there was need for the Zimbabwean rugby team to focus more on the 15-a-side game.

“I am impressed by the Sevens team’s performance, but I would still encourage them to focus more on the 15-a-side game because that is the only way they can go up on the World Rankings,” said the Springboks star.

Zimbabwe’s 15-a-aside team, the Sables, are the current Confederation of African Rugby Cup Division 1A Champions.

Mtawarira, who plays for Sharks in the Super Rugby competition and is among the highest rated rugby players in South Africa, added that Zimbabwe was poised for growth if the corporate world partnered with schools and clubs to hire professional coaches from countries like South Africa.

“That is happening in other countries and it has been the main secret behind the Springboks’ success. In terms of talent, we are just the same.”

After winning the IRB World Sevens Series pre-qualifying tournament in Hong Kong, the Cheetahs qualified for the London Sevens, the final qualifying event for core-team status, which runs on May 11-12.

They will play Tonga, Russia and Georgia in the British capital.
