The subject of an Oscar-winning documentary, Bulawayo singer Prudence Mabhena has forged a musical alliance with Bhuku Romweya, a Bulawayo based a capella gospel group.

Together, they’ve released a ten-track album called Pamusoro Pemvura “I decided to join hands with Bhuku Romweya after realising that I shared a lot of things with the group. Members of the group belong to different sects of the Johanne Masove and I also happen to be a mupositori. I have added a female voice to the music,” said Mabhena.

One of the songs on the album, Tose Tirivanhu (we are all people) was composed by Mabhena.

“I was trying to show the world that disability does not mean inability. We are all human beings regardless of our physical appearances. This song is dedicated to all disabled people out there,” said Mabhena, whose legs were amputated when she was a child due to arthrogryposis, a disease that causes severe deformation of joints.

The film of the seven-member band, who all have disabilities, made it into this year’s Oscar list.
