National Rugby League chairman Noddy Kanyangarara, confirmed the promotion. “It is good to have the Shumbas back in the top-flight league,” said Kanyangarara. “We know that they have been longing to come back. They will definitely come back fired up and that is the energy we need as we want to keep the league reinvigorated every year.”
Mutare Sports Club are one of the few clubs from outside Harare that draw a huge following during their home games. Manicaland province chairman Richard Chiwandire, who also sits on the Zimbabwe Rugby Union board, believed Mutare’s success would help develop talent in the eastern border town.
“It was certainly not an easy road for the team. It required a lot of hard work and sacrifice. I am happy that we managed to achieve our goals. We hope to continue working hard so that we develop the talent we have here in Manicaland,” he said.
Webster “Zeus” Damba a former Mutare Sports Club player said: “Weekends will never be the same again. We will now have quality entertainment at our doorstep. We are happy for the team and I want to wish them well in the topflight league.”
