Matema ready for new season

Former Highlanders top striker Ralph Matema said this week he was ready for the new season, where he hoped to help his National First Division side Witbank Spurs win some silverware.

Matema believed Spurs would be the team to beat this season, as they bid for PSL promotion, or a play-offs position. Last season, they endured yet another disappointing end, but Matema said all that was bound to be changed this season.

Matema is still as lethal in the Spurs jersey as he was wearing the black and white of Highlanders back home, but injuries that have dogged his career since arrival here in 1997 have been the main reason his side does not get a promotion. Whenever the former Zimbabwe national team is not in the line-up, Spurs struggle in front of goal.

He has on more than one occasion returned from injury to pick the side from a relegation spot and drive them back into contention for a play-offs place, banging with aplomb.

“I know who I’m and what I am capable of in front of goals. There are some challenges which nearly hampered my football dreams, but I hope those will soon be in the past,” he said.

“During off-season, I kept myself busy doing different kinds of exercises that ranged from body fitness, diet, road running and my lethal shooting. I am ready to resume full training with the rest of the team as scheduled – two weeks from now. This time we will approach our NFD games differently and I want to send a message to our opponents. It will be total war.”
