Grim reality forces Ncube to get creative

When Batumi Ncube, 33, chose to pursue a course in Cutting and Designing after completing her secondary education, she was confident that getting a job in the clothing/textile industry would be a stroll in the park.

At the time her confidence was boosted by the large number of vibrant clothing and textile firms operating in Bulawayo supplying both local and export markets. But by the time she completed her course in 2007, companies were retrenching and not recruiting workers. A depressing era for workers and employment seekers had started.

Faced with this grim reality, Ncube decided to form her own company 'Marvelous Designs', which specialises in producing unusual, high-quality bedspreads, curtains and chair covers.

“Unemployment forced me to form this company. After completing the course at the Academy of Cutting and Designing in the city I am qualified in home décor as well as dress designing,” said Ncube in a recent interview.

She designs her products to suit the taste of her various clients. “All my products, including the bedspreads, are unique, distinctive and comparable to products sold in the open market. With everything that I design or sew, I always go the extra mile to make my product more unique than those of my competitors,” said Ncube, who is the ninth child in a family of 12. She now sustains herself and other members of the family through her business.

A double bed cover sells for $150 and she sells an average of 10 c per month to clients from all walks of life. “Presently, business is a bit down, but I am soldiering on in order to look after my sisters. I have relaxed payment conditions in order to attract more customers and also offer 'lay–by' facilities,” she said.

This young entrepreneur, who is also rearing chickens, says she plans to acquire heavy industrial machines and relocate to a bigger and more strategic area in town. She currently operates from her home in Thorngrove residential area.

“My dream is to employ unemployed youths from my neighbourhood. My biggest challenge to expansion is the lack of capital. As a young person, it is very difficult to secure a loan. I wish there were banks which specifically catered for young entrepreneurs,” she added.

Ncube, a devoted Christian, says she also has plans to open an orphanage. “Growing up in an area where there are many orphans, I have always wanted to open a home for them. One day I believe that my dream will be realised when heaven opens a door for me,” she said.
