ERC urges e-voting for 2018

A local non-partisan think-tank on elections and democracy has urged the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to draw lessons from the just ended Namibian polls and implement electronic voting in the 2018 election.

The Elections Resource Centre believes shifting to this system will erase past problems of transparency and legitimacy. Namibia used the electronic voting system last year – becoming the first African nation to do so – and produced a flawless exercise that was praised the world over and endorsed by the losers.

“Since the controversial 2008 and 2013 elections, the ERC has been monitoring national elections of neighbouring countries with the purpose of trying to find out why it is only Zimbabwe whose elections are contested. We are convinced that electronic voting witnessed in Namibia is the only way to go. It is cheap and easy as compared to the manual one that we have used since 1980,” said the director, Tawanda Chimhini, recently.

“One of the advantages of technology is that it removes human error and rigging, which has been the biggest talking point since 2008. We want a situation where those defeated in the elections can endorse the results. E-voting is our only hope of solving the legitimacy crisis our government faces,” he said.
