Special honour for Olympics team

The Zimbabwe Special Olympics team will on Thursday be honoured for their outstanding performance at the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Championships in Los Angeles, USA.

The 15-member team won 12 medals, a great achievement, according to the Special Olympics Zimbabwe, considering the level of competition they met. They last participated eight years ago.
Head of delegation, Viola Musariri, said it was important to honour the outstanding athletes in order to encourage more parents to involve their children in sport. “The team performed beyond our expectations. They made their presence felt on the world stage, the highest level of competition for any sporting organisation. We are humbled by the tenacity and fighting spirit with which they took on the world,” said Musariri.
Eight golfers and seven athletes participated. The golf team won two gold medals, two silver and three bronze, while the athletics team came home with one gold and three bronze medals. The last time Zimbabwe were at the World Summer Games was in Shanghai, China, way back in 2007, when the 19 athletes brought home 16 medals in golf, athletics, and swimming.
There were around 7 000 athletes, 3 000 coaches, 177 countries and more than half a million spectators at the Summer World Games, the biggest sporting gathering in Los Angeles since the 1984 Olympic Games.
