Mabvuku wins HASCA teams chess tourney

Mabvuku high school are the winners of the first edition of the Harare schools chess Association (HASCA) teams chess championships tournament which was held at Churchill High school on 10 October, 2015.

schach; foto: meyer 12/04The team drew against Goromonzi High school in one of the fierce battles which saw the two sharing the spoils ending in a 2 all draw.

Panashe Gatsi and Panashe Munemo prevailed over Munyaradzi Thom and Graffi Bester on boards one and two respectively, while Solomon Chimuzura and Phillip Jekera won their games on boards three and four. Mufakose 2 High school has been doing very well in recent tournaments nearly ran away with the tournament but were clobbered by Mabvuku 3,5-0,5 in round three. The game was the game of the day as it was to decide the eventual winners of the senior boys category.

Farai Hamandishe and his troops failed to stop Munyaradzi Thom’s troops as they proved to be too hot to handle in the section for the later. This led to a final round pitting Mabvuku high school and Tafara one High school, while Goromonzi played Mufakose 2 High school.

Mabvuku dismissed Tafara one High school 2,5-1,5 in the final round while Goromonzi got a a shocking hiding of their life when they lost to Mufakose a team they have dominated since they started playing in the league.Mufakose 2 became the runners up followed by Goromonzi in third place in the senior boys category. Teams which came first won some medals so was teams which came second while those in third place got some certificates.

In the girls division Mufakose 2 High school won the category. They were led by Isabel Masawi in their quest to continue with their dominance in the girls section in Harare schools chess. Dominican Convent their arch rivals did not take part. In second place was Goromonzi girls team who lost to Mufakose 2 High in the final round.Oriel Girls high school came third in the girls division and this completed the winners in the girls category.

In the junior boys category Mufakose 2 won the section scooping  gold medals in this section. They won all their games in this section.They were followed by Highfield High in second position while Mabvuku B team and Oriel boy high were tied on third position. Mabvuku had a superior cumulative board points over Oriel boys high school.

The tournament was run by FA Farirai Gumbe assisted by Munashe Ziome.Thirty one teams in total took part in this tournament and brought out the provincial talent in teams. Kudakwashe Zimbowa’s team lost to Mabvuku high B team in a pulsating final round.

They lost 3-1, Kudakwashe is the only one who survived the Mabvuku scare. There is a lot of talent there in schools, teachers should continue to churn out players until Zimbabwe establishes a status of the best African chess playing nation.Meanwhile HASCA will have its AGM on the 16th of October at Prince Edward school at 1400hours in the lecture theatre.
