Gweru town clerk fired

A commission running affairs of the city has suspended town Clerk, Daniel Matawu over reported allegations of incompetence. The town’s chief executive officer joins 16 other councillors that were suspended from the local authority by Local government minister Saviour Kasukuwere last year.

The three member commission led by former Masvingo town clerk, Tsunga Mhangami has already received a barrage of criticism from residents and the MDC-T for taking advantage of the absence of elected councillors to pass unpopular decisions. Since late last year, the commission has been presiding over the city’s affairs with only two Zanu (PF) councillors who were elected on by-elections held to replace two fired MDC-T city fathers. The former councillors, Albert Chirau and Moses Marecha were effectively expelled by Kasukuwere on basis of contested allegations of corruption.

Contacted for comment, town clerk Matau confirmed receiving the suspension letter but emphasised that he was unwilling to shed more light in the media on the finer details of the matter.
“I have received the suspension letter. That’s all I can say for now”, he said.
Sources at town house however revealed that Matawu who is a lawyer by profession and former magistrate, is set to take the council to court on basis of unfair dismissal.
“The city council may lose a lot of revenue in legal suits because the town clerk has confided in us that he will sue the local authority. He has the legal background to successfully bid for a lawsuit and its likely he will win the case. It’s a monumental blunder that has been made by the commission”, said a highly placed source.
MDC-T Midlands South spokesperson said Matawu’s suspension is a big blow to the party’s suspended councillors who were looking up to him to hear their cases of appeal.
“It looks like the Zanu (PF) commission is on a war-path to sack everyone that is opposed to its interests. Matawu is only a victim of that purge and it is a bad day the city of Gweru, he said.
