Action for Accountability Groups form Peace Gardens in Zaka District

COTRAD Action for Accountability Groups in Zaka District have created peace gardens in the district as a nonpartisan platform where youth from all political parties meet, work together to curb unemployment, discuss political developments and shun possible sources of violence in the district.

GardensThe establishment is multifaceted as it is a way of dealing with unemployment, potential conflicts, heal the community from past political violence wounds and service COTRAD structures well in its continuous public officials-citizens engagement processes which well culminates into election relegated programming.

The gardens have been formed at Kokorwe River in ward 34 and Mafuratidze River in ward 9 in Zaka Central. The COTRAD through assistance from its partners has supported the two gardens with seedlings in a competition that will see a field day conducted once the yield is ripe. A partnership with the local business community has been put in place to ensure the farm produce is consumed by the local market when it’s ripe.

Ward 34 Councillor Mr Vandirai Danhai welcomed the initiative and highlighted that this is important as it limits urban drift.The Councillor thanked COTRAD for its community dialogue platforms which have led to young people engaging community leaders on development issues. Mafuratidze garden chairperson Mashandi Primrose highlighted that this is a unique platform in their area, young people now feel included in the community and can control their destiny without manipulation or interference by community leaders. COTRAD programmes manager insisted that the gardens are for peace building and poverty eradication measure and voter mobilization
