RENAMO murders Frelimo official in Sofala

Maputo (AIM) – Gunmen of the former rebel movement Renamo murdered an official of the ruling Frelimo Party in Nhamatanda district, in the central Mozambican province of Sofala on Monday morning, according to a report in Tuesday’s issue of the Maputo daily “Noticias”.

renamo3The victim, 66 year old Manecas da Silva, was a Frelimo circle secretary (the circle is the rung in the party organization intermediate between a branch and a zone), and also a judge in the Chidassicua Community Court.

The Nhamatanda district administrator, Boavida Manuel, told reporters that Silva was murdered at his home shortly after midnight by a group of six Renamo gunmen. His wife, 47 year old Dorca Benjamin, was seriously injured, and is currently under medical care in Beira Central Hospital.

Also on Monday morning, a Renamo group opened fire on vehicles on the main north-south highway near the small Sofala town of Muxungue, in Chibabava district. The district administrator, Luis Nhanzozo, told “Noticias” the shots were fired at around 08.00, but caused no casualties and no damage. Traffic continued to flow normally along the road after the incident.

A week ago the Renamo head of mobilization in Sofala, Horacio Calavete, claiming to be acting on the instructions of Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama, threatened to block key roads in the centre of the country. On Thursday and Friday Renamo launched several ambushes, mainly against the north-south highway, in which six people were injured.
