Corrupt food aid committee disbanded

Ward 21 councillor, Simon Kamurai of Shurugwi South Constituency has been hailed for taking a bold stance against corruption by disbanding the food aid distribution committee run by fellow Zanu PF members after it emerged that their activities were causing deep divisions in the community.

food hunger zimThis reporter learnt that the committee in charge of food distribution had been unilaterally sanctioned by local MP, Tapiwanashe Matangaidze and had resulted in starving villagers questioning its mandate and biased nature.

The ruling party committee practised selective food distribution and made life difficult for opposition party members, the disabled and the elderly and caused villagers to angrily criticise the local councillor and his food distributing committee for favouring Zanu PF supporters and their own family members in the distribution of food aid meant for all drought victims in the ward.

Following a meeting held at the ward centre last Tuesday four Zanu PF district officials comprising the National youth leader/Zanu PF district chairperson, Noel Mposi, secretary Tendai Mubereki, political commissariat Patrick Mbiba and youth chairperson, Tafara Mubereki were fired for lack of transparency in dealing with public funds.

“We thank the local councillor, Simon Kamurai, the media and villagers for exposing the heartless, corrupt committee and for disbanding its operation with immediate effect. We hope to see positive change in the manner in which the new committee operates. We look forward to a situation where people benefit regardless of political affiliation, race, tribe, colour, gender, religion or personal preferences,” said a senior citizen who requested anonymity.

Villagers were most grateful to councillor Kamurai for facilitating the termination of the corrupt committee that charged villagers huge sums of money while at the same time getting free government transport.

“The Community Share Ownership Trust Fund vehicles management only demanded they buy $60 for fuel and the rest they put to their own use,” said Enock Sibanda Sibanda.

It was proven that councillor Kamurai had nothing to do with the misuse of funds after an investigative news team unearthed and published anomaly cases against the committee in which they were accused of fraud regarding money contributed by villagers towards transport costs of food from Tongogara to Dorset.

Contacted for comment Zanu PF ward 21 District chairperson, Mposi said they were assigned to distribute the social welfare food by the local legislator, Matangaidze after Cllr Kamurai got swindled out of more than ten tonnes of the peoples’ fertiliser.

In the same ward, only five months into office Kashambe Zanu PF district chairperson, Makedhenge was recently accused of nepotism and maladministration by villagers.
