Maid sold to Kuwait agent for $10k, court told

A ZIMBABWEAN woman got the shock of her life when she arrived in Kuwait where she had been promised a job only to hear that she had been sold for $10, 000 by a Harare man.

US-Dollar-250This came out Friday when another suspected human trafficking agent alleged to have recruited women to Kuwait was dragged to the courts.

Morris Chivandire of Glen Norah A in Harare appeared before magistrate Tendai Mahwe facing charges of contravening the Trafficking in Persons Act. The 38 year old walked out on $500 bail.

He became the 13th agent to have been charged in connection with this saga so far.

According to prosecutors, in January this year the complainant received information that Chivandire was recruiting women to work as house maids in Kuwait.

On February 1 the unemployed woman got interested and contacted Chivandire. She then proceeded to the agent’s office room number 501, 5th floor Robin House in Harare.

Chivandire advised her to obtain a police clearance certificate, medical examination report and HIV tests.

The complainant was told that if she was HIV positive she would not qualify for the job.

After completing the tests and documentation the complainant handed the papers to Chivandire on February 8.

It is alleged she was ordered to submit two full photographs of herself dressed in long black dresses and a head tie like a Muslim.

The court heard on March 3 around 10am Chivandire sent the complainant through social network platform, WhatsApp her visa and work contract as a professional house keeper.

Two days later the complainant was advised that her ticket was ready and she was to leave the following day.

On March 6, the complainant boarded the plane to Kuwait and was advised that a woman called Sarah was waiting for her at the airport in Kuwait.

She arrived in Kuwait the following day and met one Fatima who made her sign a three year contract.

It is alleged the complainant was advised that she was to be paid 70 Kuwait Dinar ($231) per month.

Fatima made it clear to the complainant that she paid $10 000 to Chivandire so she owned her. The complainant was taken to her employer where she worked from 4am to 1am the following day without rest.

The court heard that she was allowed to bath once a week and would eat left over’s. She was assaulted by her employer for no reason, the court heard.

She was later transferred to Saudi Arabia where working conditions worsened and she fell ill.

The complainant was returned to the agent in Kuwait on May 10 where she was locked inside some room. She later managed to escape to the Zimbabwean Embassy where she was assisted to return home.
