PDP, MDC, ZPF parties say not eager to march

OPPOSITION political parties say they will not be caught up in the current march craze that has seized their opponents in both Zanu PF and MDC-T.

The MDC-T last month staged what was described as a successful march against recurrent poverty, corruption and massive joblessness under the Zanu PF led regime.

The well subscribed Harare march which drew thousands of party followers was followed up with an equally successful one in Bulawayo this past weekend.

Zanu PF, perhaps rattled by the massive support shown towards its main opponents, last week responded by staging the “Million Man March” to demonstrate support for President Robert Mugabe’s faltering leadership.

The party boosted the crowds by transporting thousands of its followers from all the country’s provinces.

But as the old cliché says that politics is a game of numbers, other political parties competing for space in the country’s political landscape said they were not under any pressure to demonstrate numerical presence as was the case with so-called big brothers in the game.

They were speaking in separate interviews with NewZimbabwe.com during the weekend.

Rugare Gumbo, spokesperson of Joice Mujuru’s Zimbabwe People First, said showing off numbers at this stage was not an immediate priority for the fledgling party.

Gumbo said perfecting strategies on how to remove Zanu PF from power was their main concern currently.

“We are not under any pressure at all. If it is about numbers, you will definitely see that in the future,” he said.

“We have our own philosophy of approaching politics which you see in due course.”

Similarly, Kurauone Chihwayi, spokesperson of the Professor Welshman Ncube led MDC, said it had the numbers to parade, but will not be tempted into flaunting them on the streets like its opponents.

“The MDC has no intention to abuse the hungry and the unemployed or consider street marching as a solution to the economic crisis,” Chihwayi said.

“The numbers of jobless and hungry marchers who until today are still hungry do not reflect the results of the 2018 elections.

“The MDC is working on strategies and long term solutions to the Zimbabwe crisis. The MDC has the numbers to do battle with Zanu PF today or tomorrow.”

Godern Moyo, secretary general of the Tendai Biti led PDP, said they were still preoccupied with building party structures and were ready to contribute to the struggle using their own ways.

“We appreciate all efforts to crack dictatorship, be it demonstrations by MDC-T, flag campaign by the pastor or anti-pledge prayers by the church or strikes by workers, litigation by individuals.

“All these efforts are necessary and one day they will bear fruit.

“But as PDP, we are also busy building our own war chest by structuring our new organs of the party in order to make our indelible contribution in the political sphere.”
