Unpaid govt doctors stop going to work

ZIMBABWE Hospitals Doctors Association (ZHDA) president Fortune Nyamande has said their members will stop reporting for work beginning July 1, due to financial constraints.

zimbabwe-nurses-and-doctors-1The development coincides with a decision, also taking effect on July 1, by private doctors to refuse treating patients on medical aid schemes unless they can pay in cash.

The cash-strapped government delayed civil service pay for this month with teachers and health sector workers told they would only get their salaries on July 7 and 14 respectively.

An offer by government ministers of some $100 advance to help cover transport costs has been rejected by unions representing the State workers.

In a letter addressed to government hospitals and signed by all ZHDA executive members, the association said members would only report for work after they receive their June salaries.

“We, the hospital doctors, wish to inform you that, due to financial constraints, we are unable to report for duty from 1st July 2016,” association said.

“We understand that the situation is being rectified, but we, on our part, are unable to meet the transport costs, cannot put food on the table as most of us are the sole breadwinners in our families.

“We are also failing to pay for our rentals and (other) bills. While we are going to receive $100 in advance, it will not be enough to cover food, rentals and our families’ subsistence.

“It is because of these financial constraints that we are communicating with you our inability to report for work from July 1st till we receive our salaries.”
