Chivhu ward 12 Moderate On 23 August 2016, ZANU PF youths led by war veterans Joaquim Chivandire and Moses Matarutse disrupted a meeting that was organized by Chivhu Residents Trust at Chivhu Community Hall. The meeting was also attended by officials from the Ministry of Local government, Public Works and National Housing. The meeting’s objective was aimed at empowering citizens to express their voices on local governance issues with local leaders. When the officials from the Ministry of Local government took to the podium to address the meeting, ZANU PF youths started chanting slogans. The youths then ordered that the meeting be abandoned. Police who were covering the meeting watched helplessly as the meeting ended abruptly, although it was cleared by the police.
Mbire ward 17 Moderate On the 20th of August 2016, a ZANU PF leader, Marjory Rukweza threatened local residents attending a community  meeting at Majongwe Primary School. The Youth Leader told people that they should all support ZANU PF and warned that all those who continue to support opposition parties will witness violence similar to that experienced during the 2008 elections. She also told all Village heads present that they should instruct people to vote resoundingly for ZANU PF in the 2018 elections. She also announced to Village heads that in the coming 2018 elections, they will vote in alphabetical order with their people. This she said, will allow ZANU PF to detect those who would have voted for any opposition party.
Gutu ward 2 Moderate On 18 August 2016, at a Village Development Committee (VIDCO) meeting held in Gutu at Chiguhune shopping Centre, ZANU PF District Executive member, Patrick Poshiwa, told people that ZANU PF was compiling a list of all known opposition supporters in the area. He told villagers that if they have relatives who support opposition parties in the area, they should warn them as ZANU PF will unleash violence similar to the 2008 electoral violence against all opposition supporters in the area. As a result of this most community members are living in fear. No police reports have been made so far.
Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe ward 6 Moderate On 20 August 2016, ZANU PF leadership in ward 6 led by ward chairman, Godfrey Chikono moved in the ward tracking down people who had attended a meeting that was called for by Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (RTUZ) at Mutawatawa business Centre on the 19th of August 2016. During the exercise, Chikono told villagers that if they continued to attend meeting not sanctioned by the ZANU PF leadership, they run are risk of being evicted in the area.

 

In a separate incident, ZANU PF held a meeting on 21 August 2016, in Hukuimwe village which was addressed by ZANU PF District Chairman, Cleopas Kufuka. At the meeting, Kufuka told villagers that all known opposition supporters in the area, will be “eliminated” before the 2018 elections. When asked by one villager what he meant, Kufuka only said that people should never forget the 2008 violence.

 

Muzarabani ward 19 Tense On 23 August 2016, ZANU PF held a party meeting at Utete Township, ward 19. ZANU PF ward chairman, Tapiwa Mapani addressed the meeting and blamed Village heads for failing to mobilize for the meeting. He pointed out that if another meeting is called for, Village heads will be held responsible if they fail to mobilize community members. He also told villagers that if they continue boycotting ZANU PF meetings they risk witnessing similar violence that took place in the 2008 elections.
Mt Darwin  ward 14 Moderate On 23 August 2016, ZANU PF held a meeting at Nyamazvizvi Primary school. ZANU PF ward chairman, Osward Chinyanga addressed the meeting. At the meeting he told those gathered that since most people were in the habit of boycotting ZANU PF meetings,  his party was going to  deploy a team of youths who would embark on door to door campaigns, force-marching people to ZANU PF meetings. He also said that this exercise will commence on 26 August 2016 in preparation of a ZANU PF meeting to be held at Nyamazvizvi Primary school.
Bikita ward 10 Moderate On 24 August 2016, an unidentified man who only identified himself as “Madzibaba” approached Douglas Rambe at Nyika Growth point, young brother to Ernest Rambe, a member of opposition political party, National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) and told him that his brother should stop campaigning for Madock Chivasa, the NCA parliamentary candidate for the by election. The man also warned Douglas Rambe that if his brother continued to campaign for Chivasa, he risked losing his life. Ernest Rambe has since fled from Bikita out of fear of what might befall him. The case has not been reported to the police.
Harare Tense Following a peaceful demonstration against police brutality that was organized by the MDC-T Youth Assembly on 24 August 2016, riot police clashed with protestors and fired tear smoke canisters against protestors who were on their way to hand a petition against police brutality to  the Ministry of Home Affairs offices. As the police fought running battles with demonstrators, they ended up firing tear smoke to ordinary citizens who were not part of the demonstration. Police also fired tear smoke into a commuter omnibus that had passengers. This then caused protestors to retaliate resulting in them fighting back using stones. In the exchanges that followed, two vehicles belonging to the police and the Zimbabwe Broadcasting corporation were burnt. In the process, police carried out a series of arrests and arrested 59 people, the majority of them being civilians who were going about their day to day activities. Following the demonstration in Harare, heavy police have been deployed in areas such as Masvingo, Gutu and Mutare ahead of the National Elections Reform Agenda ( NERA) protest march scheduled for tomorrow 26 August 2016 in Harare. Members of the police suspect that the NERA protest march might cascade to smaller towns and cities.
