Air pollution tops WHO limit

Air pollution in Harare has reached critical levels exceeding the World Health Organization recommended limit of 50 mg per cubic metre to 200 mg per cubic metre of sulphur dioxide Mutsa Chasi, Environmental Management Agency Director General told the recent Green Business Indaba.

Those citizens must be accorded their right to a clean, safe and healthy environment.

Sulphur Dioxide is a moderate to strong irritant. Most inhaled SO2 only penetrates as far as the nose and throat with minimal amounts reaching the lungs unless the person is breathing heavily.

As a result of severe exposures, permanent lung injury may occur.
