Sources said the ZIFA have embarked on a search for a foreign coach who will guide them to the 2010 Nations cup and the world cup which will be hosted by neighbours South Africa.
Mhlauri’s technical team comprising of assistant coach Methembe Ndlovu and team manager Ernest Sibanda were also relived of their duties.
Mhlauri had vowed he would not step down despite public pressure after Zimbabwe’s loss to Morocco over a fortnight ago meant they had crashed out of the Nations Cup race.
Last week Mhlauri appeared to have survived the axe after Vice-President Joseph Msika threw his weight behind the embattled coach.
Mhlauri has been charge of the Warriors since September 2004 when Rahman Gumbo was fired for losing 3-0 to Nigeria at home.
