Raw sewer floods homes and streets in Mabvuku

Most sewer pipes in Harare, particularly in Mabvuku are old and severely damaged. Harare sewer reticulation system has continuously deteriorated since the ZINWA take over. The residents of Harare and civil society have repeatedly protested against this take over, but the Government’ maintains that they will never be any revision of the ZINWA takeover decision. The sight of road surfaces covered with raw sewage, and little children playing in flowing raw sewer is now a common feature in Mabvuku and other High density suburbs of Harare. On numerous occasions, residents are forced to fix burst sewer pipes on their own as ZINWA fails to attend to their cries for help.’ It is sad that the residents are carrying out these tasks without any protective clothing, something that further exposes them to various diseases. Of late, ZINWA employees have been going on strike as they protest against low wages as well as poor working conditions. CHRA maintains that the residents have a right to live in a clean environment. The collapse of the sewer reticulation system is a serious health hazard for the innocent residents. By failing to discharge its duties effectively, ZINWA is in serious violation of the residents’ right to a clean physical environment. Meanwhile the water crisis continues in some parts that include Hatfield, Masasa Park, Tafara, Waterfalls, Glen Lorne, Avondale and Highlands. CHRA maintains that, by deciding to transfer water and sewer management from the city council to ZINWA, the current regime remains responsible for the suffering of the residents at the incapable hands of ZINWA.
