Evil abounds as dictator clings to power

BY JOHN MAKUMBE
The past few weeks have amply demonstrated that the Zimbabwe crisis is more complex than most of us had initially envisaged

. Perhaps the most baffled person in this case is none other than Mr. Thabo Mbeki, President of South Africa. I am sure when he accepted the job of facilitator or mediator in the Zimbabwe crisis he expected to succeed in getting the MDC and Zanu (PF) to sign on the dotted line and live happily ever after. That would have been a wonderful feather in his cap, but sadly it was not to be. There is but a remote chance that he might still succeed, but time is not on his side. April 2009 is fast approaching while the two Zimbabwean sides are still bickering about the definition of power sharing vis-à-vis power transfer.

Months ago I publicly expressed in some quarters that the political behavior of my highly educated brother, AGO Mutambara and his mentor Welshman Ncube was suspect. Some good friends chided me for seeing evil where only good exists. The recent signing of the Muzorewa type arrangement by Mugabe and Mutambara more than vindicated my fears then. I salute the MDC (Mutambara) MPs who courageously voted for Lovemore Moyo for Speaker of the House of Assembly in defiance of the orders and instructions from their faction leaders who had promised to support the Zanu (PF) candidate. I hope these MPs will maintain their stance and get their quisling leaders who are salivating for the crumbs that the evil dictator may drop from his high table in the House of Hunger. I am reliably informed that most these ten MPs are ready to defect to the real MDC led by Morgan should their learned leaders insist on them voting with the dictator and his “wives”.

Meanwhile, the dictator is still smarting at being booed and humiliated when he opened Parliament last week. The despot had never imagined that there could be any group of Zimbabweans that would dare to stage a shouting contest against him and live to tell the story. How the mighty have fallen. It is true that the MDC legislators were only expressing a fraction of the real anger that exists among the people of this country. The dictator will obviously ignore all of that noise and carry on regardless.

But there is no doubt in his mind now that he is rejected by the people he claims to rule. He is despised by even the least politically inclined Zimbabwean who is nonetheless facing daily hunger, joblessness, ill-health, among other problems that are a direct result of Mugabe’s failure to govern this country. Spare a thought for all our school-going children who this week will get into classrooms where there are no teachers. The damage to their lives could well be permanent, but the tyrant does not care.

What is worse is to live in a country where the demonic leader who claims to have liberated this country orders humanitarian NGOs to stop feeding the poor and destitute people of this country for his political benefit. Only hell can author an order such as that one. It is difficult even for the most ardent supporters of Robert Mugabe and Zanu (PF) to fathom the issuance of orders to prevent NGOs from feeding people and from providing them with medicines. Mugabe himself sits every day to a sumptuous meal three times every day. His children feed until they vomit; but he orders that the needy in this country should not receive any assistance because otherwise they will support the MDC. The man is evil to the core. Evil indeed, abounds when evil people are in power. The only solution is regime change.
