Army to descend on gold panners

soldierSHURUGWI - The Zimbabwe National Army has been deployed into the area to crack down on illegal gold panners, The Zimbabwean has learnt.

“We hope our sending of the army and police details to vacate these places especially around the UNKI Mines and other major mines will go a long way in reducing gold panning activities, said a spokesperson from the Natural Resources Management. “The nation is spending too much money on trying to curb the effects of HIV and AIDS instead of development. That is not a healthy trend for any nation.

The spokesperson said that the leadership had agreed that there was need to seek a strong intervention from the police and the army to vacate both gold panners and the small camps of vendors that had developed around the panning sites in the district.

“Many pupils fall prey to these gold panners who are splashing cash everywhere,” he said.
