Ex-mayor dies in UK

BULAWAYO Former Bulawayo Mayor, Alderman Mike Constandinos, has been laid to rest at the age of 78. His eldest daughter, Nicola Gouma, said her father passed away on 17 April in Pooledorset, England where he had been living for the past four years.


He died at 4am at Pooledorset due to Altimezers, a hereditary brain disease that affects the rest of the body, said Mrs Gouma who lives in Bulawayo.

Gouma said her father would be cremated at the Poole Crematorium on Thursday at 12pm British time.

Bulawayo City Council (BCC) chamber secretary, Sikhangele Zhou, on Monday described the death of Constandinos, the last white mayor of the city, as a sad loss to Bulawayo.

We have lost someone who served the local authority for so many years and his death is a great loss to us all, she said.

Zhou said the local authority would on Thursday morning hold a funeral service for Constandinos in the council chambers.

The funeral service will be held at the same time that Constandinos will be cremated in England, she said.

Born on 23 November 1931 in London, Ald Constandinos came to then Southern Rhodesia in 1957 where he worked at Prudential Assurance Company in Bulawayo as a branch manager.

He joined the council in 1974 as councillor for ward four and served in a number of council committees. Between 1978 and 1979 Ald Constandinos served as Deputy Mayor of Bulawayo and Mayor between 1979 and 1981.
