The Association for the Physically Disabled in Mandela Bay has joined forces with the municipalityand Fifa to secure an accommodating atmosphere for disabled people during the World Cup. The associations executive director, Brian Bezuidenhout, told Disabled News: The Mandela Bay stadium, transport system and accommodation establishments will provide the most comprehensive service for people with disabilities on a national level for the entire duration of the World Cup and beyond.
The association and Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism have joined forces in preparing about 40 accommodation establishments to become disability-friendly for the World Cup and beyond. I commend Fifa and the municipality for allowing our organisation to take a hands-on approach to ensuring that preparations leading to the World Cup come out successfully.
Bezuidenhout said sufficient and efficient staff had been employed to deal with the challenges faced by the disabled people. Bezuidenhout said soccer fans with disabilities would be escorted from all the various fun spots back to the airport and also to their accommodation establishments.
The services apply to any physically challenged person visiting the stadiums and fan parks during the World Cup, irrespective of which part of the country they come from.
He said 10 specially adapted buses would cover all routes to the games and the fan fest. The buses will operate from 8am to midnight for the full 25 days and each bus will be manned by two carefully selected caregivers.
