No reward for Soccer Stars-PSL

footballHARARE - THE outstanding eleven players selected by a panel of football writers for the 2010 season will not receive any prize for gracing the Soccer Stars of the Year calendar with the Premier Soccer League(PSL) revealing that they have not found a sponsor to bankroll the awards.

It is the first time that the players who grace the calendar for a particular season fail to get rewards. The league chief executive officer Kenny Ndebele told The Zimbabwean that the league had no money to sponsor the awards. Ndebele added that there would also be no cash reward for the Golden Boot Winner.

“As PSL we have nothing at all because we failed to secure sponsorship for the past season because companies had already drawn up their budgets when we entered into negotiations with them. We were also looking forward to the Sports Writers Association of Zimbabwe (Swaz) to source for the sponsorship to honour the outstanding players,” said Ndebele.

This means the country’s leading goal scorer Norman Maroto who won the golden boot award for the first time after it eluded him for four seasons will also go home empty handed.

The Gunners marksman banged in 21 league goals including five cup goals to take his goal tally to 26 and emerge as the leading scorer pushing Motor Action’s Charles Sibanda to the shade. Sibanda finished the season on 12 league goals. Other young stars Highlanders’ Joel Ngodzo, Motor Action’s Allan Gahadzikwa will also not receive anything for their outstanding performances in the just ended season despite gracing the Soccer Stars of the Year calendar.

2010 Soccer Stars List: Charles Sibanda (Motor Action), Benjamin Marere (Dynamos), Menard Mupera (Highlanders), Joel Ngodzo(Highlanders), Allan Gahadzikwa (Motor Action), Fortune Ncube (Whange), Bekimpilo Ncube (Motor Action), Desmond Maringwa (Dynamos), Edmore Sibanda (CAPS United), Norman Maroto (Gunners), Nyasha Mukumbi (CAPS United).
