Griffon Financial Services recently launched a funeral cover and legal services for foreigners, of which Zimbabweans are estimated to be the biggest population and the most affected. Hansie Kotze, the companys director, told The Zimbabwean here this week that the packages, offered in partnership with one of South Africas biggest underwriters AVBOB, and Community Legal Clinic, were both launched last month.

We realised that most foreigners were finding it difficult to cope with the event of a relative or breadwinner dying here in South Africa and we entered into an administration contract with AVBOB, who will pay the money immediately in the event of death, said Kotze. Many foreigners are also subjected to unfair labour practices, such as dismissal, and we also cover that.

To be eligible to join the schemes, foreigners will need to produce documents indicating their country of origin, and those that allow them to be legally in South Africa.

They can register with their South African Identity documents, passports with valid residence permits or their refugee permits, said Kotze. He added that in the event of death, amounts due are processed within a day of delivering all necessary papers at the companys offices. Should the deceased be buried in South Africa, there are added benefits, such as free transport, coffin, hearse and graveside equipment.
