Chiefs, politicians abuse civil servants

MUTARE - Traditional leaders and Zanu (PF) politicians have been accused of abusing civil servants by forcing them to attend their rallies and chant political slogans.

Permanent Secretary in the Tourism and Hospitality ministry, Sylvester Maunganidze, also a staunch Zanu (PF) supporter, surprised the crowd when he openly attacked politicians and chiefs for intimidating and harassing civil servants and teachers in the area.

He was addressing a function at Maringire Business Centre where villagers had gathered to mark the launch of community-based tourism.

That should stop because civil servants are professional people who should serve the country without fear or favour, said Maunganidze, adding that civil servants must be apolitical and should not chant political slogans at any platform.

He said he knew that many were doing it out of fear and warned chiefs to stop intimidation and harassments immediately.

We live in fear here because chiefs and war veterans always threaten us if we dont attend Zanu (PF) meetings and vigils, a school teacher said.

Some of our colleagues ran away because they were receiving threats everyday from war veterans and militia.
