Soccer stars defy FIFA regs to campaign for Zanu (PF)

Desperate Zanu (PF) officials have resorted to roping premier soccer league players and coaches into their campaign trails ahead of the anticipated elections this year or early next year.

Dynamos striker Murape Murape and former Caps United coach Moses Chunga recently addressed separate Zanu (PF) campaign rallies in Mutorashanga and Chegutu respectively.

Two weeks ago, Chunga, who is also a former Dynamos player and coach, addressed a Zanu (PF) campaign rally organised by politburo member and Minister of Local government Ignatius Chombo in Mutorashanga where the minister sponsored a football tournament.

The venue of the tournament was decorated with Zanu (PF) campaign posters including President Mugabe and Chombo’s campaign posters.

“Minister pano ndaona talent. (Minister I have discovered talent here),” said Chunga.

A week ago Murape also accompanied Shamu, the Zanu (PF) national commissar, to a Zanu (PF) restructuring meeting at Dzingai Nkomo cooperative in Chegutu, where he took to the podium amid wild cheers from the Zanu (PF) supporters and donated soccer and netball balls to party youths.

During the restricted meeting, Shamu also donated 16 bicycles to all the district commissars in Chegutu east. Under the Football International Federation Association regulations, players are not allowed to meddle in local politics of their respective countries. A Zimbabwe Football Association official said Chunga and Murape could face disciplinary action from ZIFA for addressing political rallies.

Both Chunga and Murape could not be reached for comment. Last week the illegal Governor for Manicaland province, Christopher Mushohwe, also organised a soccer tournament at Nyanyadzi secondary school in Chimanimani where participating schools were given soccer kit with Zanu (PF)’s logo.
