War veterans, Resident Association support suspended mayor

Moderate war veterans in the city and Mutare Residents and Ratepayers Association have thrown their support behind the suspended city Mayor Brian Lesley James saying his suspension was “unjustified”.

War veterans who declined to be named for fear of victimization by some Zanu (PF) zealots said they fully behind Mayor James because of his efforts to turn around the fortunes of the city.

“Although Mayor James is white he has done a lot to improve the face of Mutare. We will use our influence to make sure that he is back in the office. That`s stupid politics to suspend someone who is doing his best to improve the city.Definately we will talk to Chombo over the matter to reverse his decision,” said one of the war veterans.

They said it’s high time people should stop politics of suspending competent people, saying it was a disservice to the local community.

The war veterans blamed some MDC councilors for nicodemously writing false reports to please find these stories for the website.The events took part today in Mutare.

Local Government and Urban Development minister Ignatius Chombo to suspend mayor James.

“We don’t see the reason why people from the same party write some false report to the minister to suspend their colleague. There is an underhand but its high time MDC should improve its selection of candidates, “said the war veteran.

In an interview during the sidelines of a symposium meeting on local governance organised by National Association of Non Governmental Organisations(NANGO) today, Mutare Residents and Ratepayers Association Coordinator David Mutambirwa did not mince his words He said the suspension of the mayor was illegal and mischievous.

Mutambirwa said as residents they were not happy with the development taking place at the civic centre which houses council offices.

He said the mayor was being punished for being accountable and transparent.

“Mayor James has passion to serve the city. He is being penalized for being accountable. He has done a lot to improve the lives and well being of the city of Mutare.We doesn’t see the reason why he was suspended,” said Mutambirwa.

Residents blamed deputy mayor George Jerrison for conniving with Zanu (PF) officials in the council management to dislodge the mayor for personal aggrandizement Mayor James said he will fight his suspension through legal channels.

Mayor James is credited for improving the face of the city. He has managed to secure a $1 million revolving fund from SIDA to improve the waste management.
