The fund, managed by Chiefs in each area, gives communities living in mining areas a share in the companies mining there. So far Zimplats in Ngezi, Unki Mine in Shurugwi and Mimosa in Zvishavane have given shares to the communities in line with the controversial indigenisation drive by President Robert Mugabe and Zanu (PF). “We hear some traditional chiefs are now claiming they bought their own shares in the diamond and platinum mines through community shares. Those shares are not for you, but for the people in your community. You should work for the people,” Nkomo told the annual chief’s conference.
Earlier in the proceedings, chiefs demanded farms, increase in their allowances, a share in Community Development Fund, guns, free duty on vehicles, body guards during elections, and diplomatic passports – among other things.
Its a shame that our community leader are now greedy like this, a gun and a body guard for what? they are afraid of what? they nolonger wants to mix with the poor. They should work for the people with the people.
