He added that the government would not stop training nurses due to the employment freeze by the treasury on all civil servant positions.
“We do not train nurses to absorb them, but rather to empower them and give them a profession and a dignity,” said Madzorera. “Every year we receive 100 000 applications and we are only able totrain 1 500 nurses. We do not know what happens to the other 99 000,so as a ministry we want to expand our training facilitiesand look beyond our bordersto countries such as South Africa, Bostwana and the United Kingdom.
Where necessary we will make government to government arrangements toenable our nurses to get jobs,” said Madzorera.
Last week Health Services Board Chairman Dr. Lovemore Mbengeranwa told Parliament’s committee on health that health care institutions wereseverely understaffed.
He said the Health Ministry’s staff complement of 24,000 health professionals was far below World Health Organization minimum standards.
Madzorera said that Zimbabwe could join countries such as Cuba inexporting human resources to recoup expenditure on training health workers.
It costs $99,000 to train a doctor and $27,000 to train a nurse in Zimbabwe annually.
