Best of the Best: Wilfred Mugeyi

Nicknamed ‘Silver Fox’ for his scoring abilities, Wilfred Mugeyi, starred for Black Aces before successful stints in South Africa, where he won the Golden Boot, Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the year. Now Ajax Cape Town’s long-serving assistant coach, he gives us his best of the best.

Gaucho will go far - Mugeyi.

My Best match

The 1993 Coca-Cola Cup Final against Santos was important for everyone as it was Umtata Bush Bucks’ first in a decade. We had them on the ropes the entire match. Brendan Augustine and I had a field day over their defence and I scored the first and he netted two for a 3-0 victory.

My Best goal

One game when we beat Supersport United 5-1 with Ajax Cape Town. I collected a pass from Thembinkosi Fanteni near the corner flag and let fly first time, catching Calvin Marlin by surprise, as he thought I would control it first.

Best league I played in

Israel, with Macabbi Haifa. The game was always played at high intensity and one had to be a quick thinker. They kept it simple with a lot of movement of the ball and did not slow the tempo by unnecessary running or dribbling.

My Best season

1996-97 at Bush Bucks. I scooped all individual accolades on offer- the Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season and Topscorer. I had a great season under Trott Moloto who would sometimes play me even when injured and would tell me only to stay in the box and score two goals, then he would substitute me. I would sometimes score a hattrick! He and my team-mates played a huge role in my success.

My Best strike partner

Brendan Augustine, at Bush Bucks. That was a partnership made in heaven and we clicked from the first training session. I was a target-man and he was a search-and-carry striker. We had a telepathic understanding and encouraged each other. If he scored, I would urge him to go for a hat-trick, making our partnership deadly. The problem with today’s strikers is that if one scores, the other wants to score as well.

Best opponent faced

Jomo Cosmos’ Andrew Rabutla. ‘Jaws of Life’ was a hard man-marker and tough-tackler.

Best Zimbabwean football export

Moses Chunga, who used to be my idol. ‘Bambo’ had great technical ability and had an instinct for goals. He was a calm figure and a good ball distributor. Playing alongside him at national level was an honour.

Best prospect

Khama Billiat. In my opinion, he’s the best technically-gifted player in the Absa Premiership. ‘Gaucho’ is the Ronaldo or Messi type who gets goals out of nothing. He is disciplined, willing to learn and wants to succeed. That will definitely take him far.

Best sportsperson outside football

I enjoy watching the Williams sisters. They are competitive and always play to the best of their qualities. They have been dominant and played many major finals against each other. They are passionate and dedicated to the game. They are arrogant in a good way, which is they way to go if you are doing well!
