The Programmes Co-ordinator for ZimRights NGO Forum, Blessing Gorejena, in a speech at the launch of an anti-violence documentary, said her organisation was concerned about organized violence that had come to characterise major political events in the country.
She said ZimRights was on high alert because political violence was likely to disrupt the forthcoming by-elections as well as the referendum which would be followed by general elections next year.
“Major political events in Zimbabwe are always spoiled by organised violence and torture,” she said. “We have worked on numerous projects to reduce organised violence and torture in this country. For instance, we have traditionally organised commemorations in support of victims of torture on the International Day of Victims of Torture for many years now.”
ZimRights director, Okay Machisa, said there was a need for urgent action to stop political violence.
“The principals in the inclusive government have on several occasions made calls for political tolerance to prevail in the county and that is what we should be seeing ,” he said.
