Telecel sponsors media training

Telecel Zimbabwe will be sponsoring the training of local journalists following a partnership with the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists.

In a statement released today, Telecel said it had availed sponsorship worth $24,000 to ZUJ.

“Telecel Zimbabwe has unveiled a $24,000 sponsorship package for the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists to facilitate the training of journalists on new media and on Information Communication Technology reporting,” the statement said.

Telecel said it would be sponsoring workshops in Gweru, Bulawayo, Masvingo and Marondera. These would be aimed at “enabling reporters to make optimum use of new media technologies and enhancing media coverage of the ICT sector”.

The mobile telephony concern’s Public Relations, Corporate Social Responsibility and Sponsorship Manager, Francis Chimanda, said in the statement that Telecel had a history of working with ZUJ.

The mobile phone operator is a platinum sponsor of the National Journalism and Media Awards. It sponsors the ICT Reporter of the Year Award as well.

“Our decision to support ZUJ and in particular the journalists covering the technology sector is part of our corporate social responsibility focus on supporting technology linked initiatives,” he said.

Chimanda said sponsorship of ZUJ organised journalist workshops started last year with two pilot workshops in Harare and Mutare.

“After the success and popularity of these training workshops among the media fraternity we decided to expand the programme’s reach to include other provinces by establishing a $24,000 fund,” he said.

“We hope our partnership with ZUJ will continue to create value for the media and the technology sector as a whole,” Chimanda added.
