Media workers should understand and appreciate contributions made by the late Nathan Shamuyarira to the industry, says Foster Dongozi, secretary general for the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists.

Shamuyarira passed on at West End Clinic, Harare, last Wednesday after a long illness.

Dongozi told The Zimbabwean that it was important for both media workers who practiced during Shamuyarira’s days as journalist and those who came after his departure from the industry to acknowledge the role he played towards the upgrading of journalism in the country.

“The decision to attend Shamuyarira’s funeral and burial would be taken at individual level but as a union we would celebrate the life of Shamuyarira as a journalist,” Dongozi said.

Dongozi said ZUJ acknowledged the role played by Shamuyarira in developing the media industry in Zimbabwe, first as the pioneer and torch bearer of black journalists before the country attained its independence in 1980 and later.

“Shamuyarira pioneered the provision of formal training of Zimbabwe journalists after independence and the formation of ZUJ,” said Dongozi.
