In November 2013 Zimbabwe Association received £35,200 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project to capture the 12 year journey of Zimbabwean asylum seekers through the UK asylum system.

Over the last 18 months ZA volunteers (in association with the Black Cultural Archives) have received expert training in oral history interviewing and archive management. Dozens of  Zimbabweans have been interviewed throughout the UK while archivists and volunteers have organised the existing ZA community archive for deposit at Black Cultural Archives.

The 12 Years exhibition showcases audio-visual material from the new ZA archive including oral histories of Zimbabwean exiles. It offers the chance to:

  • Listen to first-hand accounts and inspirational words
  • See original archives including striking photos
  • Read personal accounts
  • Follow the campaigns of the Zimbabwean exile community
  • Understand why Zimbabweans came here … and what life has been like
  • Hear about the new resources and schools packs available online

The exhibition highlights the contents and possibilities of the new ZA institutional archive, including oral histories, press clippings, photos and much more. Together these materials document and bring to life the arrival, reception and settlement of a significant new African community in the UK

‘This project has allowed us to create a lasting record of our members’ experiences,’ said Professor JoAnn McGregor, ZA Trustee.
