Mukundwa leads Gift of Chess Initiative in Zimbabwe by giving Chess sets

The Gift Of Chess Ambassador through its ambassador Walter Mukundwa , in partnership with Harare Chess Academy and Tember Banda , a volunteer  embarked on a chess outreach programme in Wedza District  where they donated chess sets to schools in Wedza , their efforts were complimented by Harare Chess Academy which conducted seperate workshops for teachers  and students for free .

Wedza is a rural district in Mashonaland East Province. The township of Wedza, which serves as the administrative centre, is located 127 km South of Harare and 50 km South of Marondera, which is the provincial capital of Mashonaland East province. According to the 2022 National Census, Wedza District has a population of 74,869.

Wedza District’s economy is agro-based. The predominant crop that is grown is tobacco. Other notable agricultural produce includes: groundnuts, maize, cotton and cattle ranching.

Wedza District is home to a total of 66 primary and 32 secondary schools. The majority of these are run by the Wedza Rural District Council, with a handful of church/mission schools. The schools in Wedza District offer a limited number of sporting and recreational activities. Unsurprisingly, less than 16 schools offer chess. We hope the chess sets and workshops will have a positive impact on the lives of the students and teachers creating a sense of belonging and pushing them to new heights.
